This article talks about planning travel according to gender, and how one transit authority accomplished that. This was another area that I really hadn't thought much about, especially women's access to transportation. I was surprised that women comprise 70% of the public transportation population. I can see why access to public transportation would become an issue for women, and that transportation companies should address these issues to help serve the population and even add to their ridership, which is an issue in the recession. Many transportation companies are actually cutting their routes and services, making it even harder for people to find or keep work.

I also found it extremely interesting that they took the time to analyze public transportation locations for their safety and look at how to design them to help prevent violence...

I had not heard of any king of prevention like this before, and it seemed like a really good idea for all transportation companies to do this kind of evaluation. I thought it was very forward thinking of the city of Toronto to get involved with women's organizations to work on problems like these, and I thought that it was a very good program that good be adapted by just about any city in the world. It also bothered me that the leadership at the TTC always seemed to dismiss many of the women's concerns, as if they weren't important enough. I think that is what keeps many companies from meeting customer's needs. They really have no clue about their customers or what they really need, and so they can't envision changes that would make their companies better while they made their customer's lives better, too. This article shows that there is real planning that needs to be done to address gender needs in different cities, and that most cities are simply ignoring the problem.
